Liverpool could sign the perfect Thiago Alcântara partner and unlock Kevin de Bruyne himself

As happened last summer, Inter Milan midfielder Nicolò Barella has been linked with a transfer to Liverpool, and many are interested in the 25 -year -old Italian international.

Among the players most similar to the Inter man, according to FBref, are Bernardo Silva, İlkay Gündoğan and Frenkie de Jong. The third most similar was Kevin de Bruyne.

Of the balls, Barella was only in the seventh percentile for pressure, and 10th for interceptions. He’s a slightly better value for tackles and aerial duels, but still not suited for that segment.

This could be a style difference between Inter and Liverpool and he could be better at that number under Jürgen Klopp, but it doesn’t look good on paper.

More promising numbers have been delivered in an offensive sense: the 98th percentile for expected help and action making shots, and the 97th percentile for combined goals and unpunished assists.

The metric describes players who receive the ball in good territory and then use it best when they have it – the type of player that Liverpool don’t have – at least in the form of a finished product.

Perhaps that’s because of the seemingly limited impact of the ball. There is no need to hit and win again at Anfield, and this is an important hurdle that needs to be overcome.

But Steven Gerrard was one of the people to get Liverpool to sign a midfielder who could make a difference in the third -final and Barella could too – fed into space by Thiago Alcântara, and then fed into Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah.

Thiago, in particular, will be able to find him in his pocket, with a progressive operant that separates the midfield, making the Spaniard the perfect foil for Italy.

“When you see the game, you’re very happy that Barella isn’t playing, because I think he’s set up, I think three or four. [in Inter’s last game]“Klopp joked at the press conference before the match before facing Inter in the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Barella was sent off against Real Madrid in a six -round group matchday and proved a costly mistake, with UEFA upgrading the ban from one game to two: two legs against Liverpool.

He proved a costly crash in the match and the feeling in Italy is that if he is fit, the Series A winner will then give the Reds more contest.

Priced at £ 63m, Inter Milan reportedly want £ 77m (€ 90m) for Barella’s signature. There was even a suggestion that he might accept Naby Keïta in exchange.

However, Liverpool insist the summer transfer business is over. Jude Bellingham is a target for 2023 and it looks like he will move on – at that point, Keïta will either agree to a new deal, or he will leave for free.

However, Barella could be an attractive alternative option for Bellingham if Liverpool need it. Older and more proven, there is no doubt about its quality.

Although not at Anfield, he was a player to watch out for over the next few years as he neared the top.
