I could look for a job at traditional news organizations. But as I read over the Knight News Challenge results, I thought about what I would do if I could get a little funding. Here’s my idea for a nonprofit start-up I’d like to create. Should I go for it?
At about 3 p.m. today, the most read story at dailytarheel.com was “Gray-Little named new provost,” a story written Feb. 9, 2006 by my friend Colin Campbell. Why in the world would that be so popular in 2009?
One of my main goals for The Daily Tar Heel next year is to bring the news organization to the forefront of innovation online. For me, the question isn’t “What can we do with the skills we have?” I want to make sure we’re asking, “If we had all the skills and resources imaginable, what would we do?”
The TNTJ topic for September is: If you were the editor of your local paper, what would you do?
I’ve grown up reading The News and Observer in Raleigh. I love that paper, so I was troubled when I discovered that newsobserver.com loses out to wral.com (the local television news site) — big time.

This is blog number four that I now operate. The other three have more pressing reason for updating.
My latest project is collegerag.net, a college [...]
Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin announced today that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant. The statement came on the heels of a weekend-long rumor that Bristol was actually the mother of 4-month-old Trig Palin, whom Sarah Palin reportedly gave birth to.
The admission is interesting enough on its own, since Palin is vehemently in favor of [...]
This Internet thing is wild.
In the days after Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain’s running mate, a scandal has bubbled up from the not so distant past. Is 4-month-old Trig Palin really Sarah’s baby? Or is he the progeny of her oldest daughter, 17-year-old Bristol?
Here’s the evidence. Convincing, no? What gets me is the [...]
On the front page of The News and Observer today appears this article, the latest in a recent McClatchy series on John Edwards regarding the tabloid article accusing him of having a love child.
The fact that the N&O and Charlotte Observer felt the need to write these stories shows that traditional media outlets are trying [...]
